Beliefs about facts and causation can change- sometimes suddenly- in the wake of new empirical evidence or a new analysis.
Quite aside from the vested interest that experts have in the use of expertise- rather than other economic or other social mechanisms- to shape consequential decisions, there is much empirical evidence of their biases.
EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE
Although such discussions have been phrased in terms of people, the actual empirical evidence cited has been about what has been happening over time to statistical categories- and that turns out to be the direct opposite of what has happened over time to flesh-and-blood human beings, most of whom move from one income category to another over time.
There is little empirical evidence to suggest that the many government interventions during the 1930s helped the economy and much evidence to suggest that they made matters worse.
